Where there is love there is always desperation in the air, hidden, latent, immanent. Four years ago, Alarma Man started off with nothing short of a milestone: their self-titled debut vehemently and forcefully defined so-called Math Punk - and then buried it. Mere consistence.
And now: the break. Just carrying on would hold no meaning. Alarma Man readjusted their components, realigned their orientation, refined their darker side. Less chaotic maybe, less hasty, but even more precisely shaped and considerably more striking when they erupt. The band continues exactly where they did not leave everything open, where they did not make their enormous promise. They deliver somewhere else. "Love Forever" is full of this eerie atmosphere just before dawn; removed, sober, foreboding. But still driven by skepticism and a diffuse yearning.

With five albums behind him and endless touring through Europe Björn has established himself as a higly appreciated live and recording artist. The songs are tiny little stories dressed up in fancy clothing. Sometimes the other way around. Always with an edge and a feeling of true athenticity. Sprung from the punk and hardcore scene Björn tends to do things in his own way, highly focused and not likely to compromise.

Under the appellation Birthmark, Nate Kinsella has embraced restraint in spite of the compositional boundlessness typically borne by musical virtuosity. On his debut album The Layer, the inventive and often byzantine drum set/Wurlitzer style he developed over the past four years in the band Make Believe is all but absent, revealing a quiet and uncanny tension of minimalist focus. And while Kinsella performed all of the music on The Layer, recalling his multi-instrumental duties in the band Joan of Arc, the listener is more awestruck by the attention to integration and score than by a whirlwind of prowess.

With only one full-length album to their name alongside a handful of singles and compilation tracks, Cap’n Jazz left a longstanding impression and irrefutable influence on the region’s bohemian punk scene and unwittingly spawned a breeding ground for future scene stars such as the Promise Ring and Joan Of Arc. Analphabetapolothology compiles thirty-four songs over two compact discs and spans the band’s entire history--six tracks of which are previously unreleased. Traces of their sonic fingerprint permeate hundreds of indie records released in their wake. This is why.

Chris Brokaw is one of the hardest working musicians in America and known throughout as a true gentleman. A great guitarist also blessed with a deep soulful songwriting skill and dry smokey voice. He was a founding member of Codeine; the band that started the Slowcore scene in the late 80’s, then he formed Come with Thalia Zedek, now drums in The New Year, plays guitar for Thurston Moore and Evan Dando and with a wealth of other high achieving acts. Chris Brokaw is a rare humble genius and one of the finest solo artists of our times.
Citay (USA, Dead Oceans)

Led by songwriter Ezra Feinberg, Citay has made a career out of studio exploration, recalling a time when studio excess was the norm. Producer Tim Green, of the Fucking Champs, is no stranger to sonic indulgence, and together Feinberg and Green have woven together a musical tapestry that is both heavy and sweet. In Citay, the metal leanings of Green’s band are replaced by an altogether different brand of fantasy rock. Dream Get Together has an embroidered and epic beauty that flies over the ocean while snuggling up to the ears. Joining Feinberg in Citay is drummer Warren Huegel, whose rhythmic sensibilities are best exemplified not only by his thunderous beats, but also his percussion decorations that lift the Citay sound from the ground up. Flanking Feinberg’s acoustic six string live are the electric guitars of Sean Smith and Josh Pollock. Bassist Diego Gonzalez holds it all together throughout. Feinberg shares vocal duties on Dream Get Together with Tahlia Harbour and Meryl Press, whose sweet, soaring voices play the perfect foil to the bombast.

Double Dagger does not make “background music.” The Baltimore trio’s songs are meant to be experienced, rather than just listened to—either at one of their intense performances or with the volume turned up loud enough to feel it in your gut. Double Dagger embodies the contradictions of the fair-yet-blighted city they call home—visceral, raw, cacophonously loud, yet with unexpected moments of clarity, humor, and revelation. Live, Double Dagger’s stripped-down musical line-up, consisting solely of bass, drums, and vocals, somehow manages to sound like a stage-full of musicians. Drummer Denny Bowen hammers the drums with such force that bassist Bruce Willen must employ four amps to match his volume. Singer Nolen Strals wades into, out of, and sometimes on top of the audience, channeling a dynamic energy that often has the three musicians dripping with sweat by the second song.

LAKE is a group of cloudy individuals brought together through lines drawn along Interstate-5, intersecting in olympia on or around 2005. Since forming, they have both gained and lost members, recorded 12 full length albums (only 3 of which have seen proper release), played across the world supporting such talented acts as Adrian Orange and Her Band, Half Handed Cloud, Laura Veirs, and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy. The sounds they craft are straight from the playbook of the good parts of Billy Joel, Fleetwood Mac, and Turkish psychedelic music. Caressing the Rhodes piano, endearing drum fills, guitars that dont sound like guitars, and some slamming bass lines: Listening to LAKE is like pouring sugar in your ears. They'll turn your brain into chocolate, 67% cacao.

An integral part of the Midwest music scene for over a decade, Love of Everything’s Bobby Burg is keeping himself interested by consistently re imagining the sound of the band. Recorded at Chicago’s Semaphore Recording Ltd. on the city’s west side by Neil Strauch (Bonnie Prince Billy / Iron and Wine). Best In Tensions marks the first time Burg has taken a whole album worth of his short, catchy, naive music poems out of the bedroom and into the studio. This time he’s not doing it alone. Joined by his former illegal immigrant wife Elisse La Roche, as well as friends, past and future band mates and whomever else was on-hand to lend their talents, Best In Tensions shelves the “one-man band” ideal in favor of the richer, fuller sound of a band with multiple members.
Elisse had never played drums before joining Love of Everything. Motivated by an opportunity to tour Europe, she learned the basics, studied the songs and found herself installed as Love of Everything’s permanent drummer.
Love of Everything are Bobby Burg and Elisse La Roche, with additional help from Tim Kinsella (Joan of Arc, Make Believe), Jeremy Bolen (Chin Up Chin Up), Jeanine O’Toole (1900s) and others.

The band – David Davison (vocals, guitar), Shiraz Dada (bass), Chris Hainey (drums), and Erin Elders (guitar) – produce a sound comparable in places to the mature, graceful pop of Band of Horses or TV On The Radio combined with the excitement of Deerhoof or Vampire Weekend and the experimentation of CAN. That their live dates see them share stages with FatCat’s Frightened Rabbit and Our Brother The Native, as well as acclaimed experimental hardcore band mewithoutYou, and African legend Vieux Farka Toure demonstrates the broad-reaching depth of sounds that Maps & Atlases take in.

New Idea Society has just released The Quiet Prism EP. It is the bands first release since a touring accident in Germany while supporting their last album The World Is Bright And Lonely. Quiet Prism, a five song EP clocking in around 26 minutes is a precursor to the new album out in the late Summer of 2010. It contains several tracks recorded by Mike Law primarily on synthesizers as the Autobahn accident left him unable to play any two handed instruments for some time. As Law put it, "I have a very visceral memory of recording some of these songs and the pain associated with some particular sounds and vocal takes. The ambient metal clanking on They Won't Find Us was me recording the metal brackets under the mixing board through a flanger as I lay under it trying to take the pressure off my ribs after a vocal take. But honestly, it seemed quite funny even at the time". Other songs like "Autumn You" and "Magic Key" are more in line with what Law and main collaborator Chris DeAngelis have planned for the upcoming album.

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin has been playing music in Springfield, Missouri since 1999, when Will Knauer and Philip Dickey met at a Super Bowl party. They came up with their band name shortly after Boris Yeltsin's resignation in the early hours of Y2K. John Robert joined the band in 2001, when he was dorm roommates with Philip at Drury University.
SSLYBY played dozens of local shows, often acoustic, from 1999-2004, and released a split EP on a local label, Generic Equivalent, in 2004. The band's first LP, Broom, was a blog hit in 2005. Jonathan James joined the band after mixing Broom on his computer.
SSLYBY followed Broom with a series of monthly cassette tapes, mailed to subscribers of the SSLYBY Tape Club. A split CD with Michael Holt from The Mommyheads was released by Catbird Records in the fall of 2005.
The band signed to Polyvinyl in the summer of 2006 (in a Congress Hotel room in Tuscon, Arizona) and re-released Broom later that fall. SSLYBY's second LP, Pershing, which was released in April 2008. Both records were self-recorded in members' and relatives' houses and were supported by over 250 national and international shows.SSLYBY performed in Moscow, Russia two months after Boris Yeltsin's death.
In August 2010, SSLYBY will release their third full-length: Let It Sway. The album was recorded at Madison's famed Smart Studios (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Rainer Maria) by Death Cab for Cutie guitarist Chris Walla and resident producer Beau Sorenson (DCFC's Plans, Sparklehorse).

Therese Aune (NO)
Press Photos & Bio
Territory - Europe / UKAgent - Björn BauchTherese Aune (NO) plays evocative dream pop on piano, toy piano and other intruments she likes. She started playing the piano as a ten year old, and has over time developed a personal expression which at times is restrained and calm and occasionally ramshackle and playful. Sometimes when the music grows too big for her to play it on her own, she brings a little orchestra along with her. It consists of violin (Hanna Furuseth), cello (Ida Eilertsen), accordion (Magnus Muldal) and drums/percussion (Hans Hulbaekmo). She likes it when the strings are daring to be slightly out of tune, when the accordion plays long drones, when the percussion is both playful and heavy, whilst she plays a wobbly piano on top of it all. She has a powerful and raw voice which gives the ears something to work with, and seeks to shape something that people cannot be indifferent to. So far the music has taken her to festivals like Slottsfjell Festival (NO) and Iceland Airwaves (ICE), and the song "Chameleon" was voted in as Ukas Urørt (Track of the Week) on P3 (Norwegian radio) in 2008.
